Belvedere: digital collection catalog on Gustav Klimt

The Belvedere is setting a new milestone in the study of its collection by publishing a comprehensive online catalog of the works by Gustav Klimt in its collection. This makes the results of several years of scholarly research publicly accessible and strengthens the museum’s role as an international center of expertise on Gustav Klimt.

Since 2022, an interdisciplinary team at the Belvedere has been conducting detailed research on the 24 works by Gustav Klimt in its collection. The digital catalog goes far beyond the capabilities of a printed catalog raisonné. In addition to detailed art-historical essays on each work, it includes documentation of conservation examinations, materials from the Belvedere archives, complete exhibition histories, extensive bibliographic references, and links to digitally available sources. A particular focus is placed on provenance research: For each work, the chain of provenance is comprehensively presented, supplemented by source references and commentary on the history of ownership. The catalog was designed as a dynamic database that is continuously expanded. Its digital structure allows new research findings to be incorporated immediately and, in the long term, can also be applied to other artists in the collection.
